EndNote and AGLC

This page is only for staff and students who will be using EndNote and the referencing system Australian Guide to Legal Citation (AGLC). If you are not certain of your referencing system, please check with your supervisor. The steps below are summarised from the University of Queensland (UQ) Guide and should be followed prior to creating your EndNote library.

Note: Each time a new version of EndNote is installed on your computer, Steps 1 and 2 will need to be repeated.

1. Downloading the output styles

There are two versions of the style; we recommend you download both:

Download instructions:

  1. Click on the links above and save your styles to:
    (C:) / Program Files / EndNote X3 / Styles
  2. Close the folder.
  3. Open EndNote.
  4. Select the Edit menu / Output Styles / Open Style Manager.
  5. Find the two AGLC3 output styles and check the box beside them.
  6. Close the Style Manager.

2. Setting up reference types

Note: this step will overwrite any existing modifications. An alternative procedure (view pages 4/5) allows you to keep any modifications you have already made to your reference types.

  • Click on the link below:
    RefTypeTable
Use your browser and Save As an XML file to the desktop.
  • Open EndNote.
  • Select the Edit menu / Preferences / Reference Types
  • Click on the Import button
  • Select the XML file on the desktop, click Open
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK
  • Close your EndNote Library and then reopen for changes to take effect

3. Labels and your references

AGLC requires that your bibliography be grouped into the sections below. EndNote requires that each of your references be labelled with one of these section titles. Note: you will need to type these headings Centred above each section within the bibliography (see [1.16] in AGLC3).

Articles/Books/Reports
Cases
Legislation
Treaties
Other

Follow the steps below:

  • Open EndNote.
  • Select Tools/Link Term Lists
  • Scroll to the Label field
  • Select Keywords (from the dropdown menu on the right)
  • Click OK
  • Select Tools / Open Term Lists
  • Select Keywords Term List
  • * Click on New Term
  • Type in: A  Articles/Books/Reports
  • Click OK
  • Repeat from * to add the other categories
  • Click Close

Using the UQ Guide and AGLC

Now that your EndNote program is customised, using AGLC3 and the UQ Guide X3 with EndNote X3 will ensure that your library is correctly formatted for each reference type.

Labelling references in the EndNote library

After entering the details for every reference, you must enter one of the section titles (saved in Step 3) into the Label field. Follow the steps below:

  • Select Tools/ Open Term Lists / Keywords Term List
  • Click on the required section title
