Evaluating Websites
It is important to evaluate all information found on the Internet as anyone can publish on any topic. Some important questions to consider during evaluation are:
Accuracy
- Can the factual information on the web page be verified from other sources?
Authority
- Who wrote the page?
- Was the author qualified to write this page?
- Which institution published the page?
Coverage
- Has the page been completed or is it still under construction?
Currency and Timeliness
- Are publish dates listed on the site?
- When was the site last revised?
Objectivity
- Why was the site created?
- Is there advertising on the site?
Hints from a web address (URL)
The URL for the website can provide you with some information about the publisher of the page:
- .edu/.ac : educational institution
- .gov : government department
- .org : organisation
- .net : network
- .com : commercial body/company
