Library Guide for the Foundation Studies Program (FSP)

This guide has been developed to supplement the Library class for students in the Foundation Studies Program. 

The Library has many resources to assist you in answering essay questions. Planning and structuring your approach to the question will make the process much easier for you.

PLANNING

• Make sure you understand what the question is asking you to do.
• Decide on the argument or approach you would like to take.
• Using your Library handout, brainstorm the key words in your question and think of alternative keywords or synonyms for these words.

SEARCHING

• Using the Library's dictionaries and encyclopedias, search for definitions and background information on your topic. 
• Search the Library Catalogue for relevant books and e-Books on your topic.
• Starting with the Library's most relevant databases for WCA, search the Library's databases for journal articles on your topic.

EVALUATING

• Was the information you found relevant to your topic and argument?
• Did you use a wide range of information sources?

REFERENCING

• Use the UOW Author-Date (Harvard) Referencing Style to acknowledge all sources used in your essay.
