This subject introduces students to geographical, historical, cultural forces and social frameworks that have shaped modern France and its people.

It seeks to provide essential information which forms part of every French speaker's consciousness by focusing on some of the key elements of French culture and civilisation through a chronological overview of the most important events in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and 17th centuries, the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, and the Third Republic until 1914.

This subject provides an intellectual and skills based subject for the French major.
