Using Microsoft Copilot for study and research

This learning pathway aims to equip you with a basic understanding and application of Generative AI (GenAI) (with a focus on Microsoft Copilot) and the ethical implications of its use in study and research.

The pathway will explore:

  • GenAI tool usage and output evaluation for accuracy and biases
  • attribution methods for informed and responsible use of GenAI according to UOW guidelines.

The video below will give you a brief overview of Gen AI guidelines at UOW.

Work through the menu to apply the concepts outlined in the video.

From 2024 all UOW subject outlines will include guidelines about the use of Generative AI. Always check with your subject coordinator about the appropriate use of GenAI as different subjects will have different requirements.

GenAI tools like Chat GPT and Microsoft co-pilot can complement your studies improve learning outcomesand prepare you for the workforce. It's important to use these tools appropriately to avoid academic misconduct. Always check if the use of GenAI is permitted for your assignments.

If it is permitted for your assignments, understand how to use and acknowledge it correctly.

  • Remember, GenAI is a powerful tool but it should never replace your critical thinking or decision making skills. Use it to complement your work, not make decisions for you.
  • Fact checking is essential because GenAI can produce false or biased information. Make sure to verify all outputs with credible sources.
  • Be aware of data protection and copyright issues. Gen AI Technologies can collect and misuse your data
  • Always read the terms and conditions and consult UOW Copyright Guidance if you have any doubts
  • When required, acknowledge your use of GenAI, including sharing prompt histories, explaining how you use the technology, and referencing gen AI outputs when you use them in your work. Assess its suitability for each task and refrain from using it when it's not appropriate

If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact your subject coordinator.
