Using Microsoft Copilot for study and research

Using Microsoft Copilot

In this learning pathway, we use Microsoft Copilot to generate our outputs. Copilot is UOW's preferred Gen AI tool as it is covered by commercial data protection. This means Microsoft does not claim ownership of the prompts you submit, or the outputs you receive from Copilot.

How do I access Copilot?

Copilot is available for UOW staff and students via any web browser, such as Edge, Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. Copilot is also available as a mobile  Android or iOS app.

To access via browser:

Step 1: Go to  https://copilot.microsoft.com/

Step 2: Check if you are signed in. If you are signed in already, you will see your UOW email address and profile picture at the top right corner of the screen, next to the green commercial data protection icon. Copilot login screen

What mode should I use in Copilot?

In Microsoft Copilot, the terms “More Creative”, “More Balanced”, and “More Precise” refer to different modes that you can choose to interact with the AI.

Each mode has a unique style and is suited for different types of tasks:

More Creative:

  • Responses more imaginative and innovative.
  • Ideal when you’re looking for fresh ideas. For example, if you’re brainstorming for a new project, writing a story, or looking for a unique approach to solve a problem.

More Balanced:

  • Strikes a balance between creativity and precision.
  • A versatile mode that can handle a wide range of tasks and prompts.

More Precise:

  • Provides accurate and detailed responses.
  • If you’re looking for specific information, need help with a technical task, or want a straightforward answer to a question.

Remember, you can switch between modes at any time depending on your needs. Try them out and see which one works best for you.
