Library services for researchers - Strategic publishing

Publishing non-traditional research outputs (NTRO)

Not all research outputs take the form of journal articles, books, book chapters or conference papers. Non-traditional research outputs could be:

  • Original creative works
  • Live performance of creative works
  • Recorded or rendered creative works
  • Curated or produced substantial public exhibitions and events
  • Research reports for an external body or Government
  • Portfolio of work.

When choosing an outlet for your NTRO, you may want to consider:

  • The reputation or prestige of potential outlets
  • The intended audience, and their ability to access your work through your chosen outlet
  • Any evidence the outlet will provide you to show engagement or impact of your work
  • Whether your work will be discoverable online and if so, will there be a link you can use during promotion
  • Consulting with peers, supervisors or mentors who have had success with similar types of outputs.

NTROs are not typically published in the conventional sense and can be difficult to find via library catalogues, databases or in Google Scholar. To allow for NTROs to be easily discovered, you should consider adding the publication details or the work to UOW's open access repository by contacting the Library's Scholarly Communications team.
