Socialise and promote your publications

Socialising and promoting your research outputs is an important component of a strategic publishing strategy. Due to the number and availability of publications being produced around the world, it is more important than ever to socialise and promote your publications to reach the widest appropriate audience.

Well managed research profiles will optimise discovery of your research outputs. Maintaining your UOW profile Scholars, which is managed through Elements, and ensuring other academic profiles are current will enable potential collaborators, funders and colleagues to find you and your publications. If you don’t already have an ORCiD ID (Open Researcher and Contributor iD), register and keep it up to date or set up automatic claiming in Elements.

Writing for The Conversation is a great way to socialise your research to the wider community or rewrite a publication for a different audience, creating engagement opportunities for you and your work by raising your profile to potential collaborators within and outside of academia. Analytical data is provided for articles in The Conversation, and these can be a source of evidence in promotion or grant applications.

Social media is another way to increase awareness of your research, engage with your peers and develop professional connections and find potential collaborators. UOW’s Advancement and Communication Division have a range of supports available to help you navigate social media as a UOW researcher (UOW staff intranet), including a list of benefits.   

Where you can, share the open access version of your research outputs. This will allow your work to be read by anyone in the world within, and outside, academia and increase the societal impact of your publications and works. Using the DOI of your research output when promoting and socialising your work also helps you to gather valuable alternative metric data about its reach and impact.
