This guide to the APA 7th edition is based on the APA 7th edition Publication Manual.  Further details, explanations and examples are available from this guide.

Please check with your subject lecturers and any assessment guides provided to you to check the appropriacy of using various types of sources in your assignments.

The APA referencing style is an author-date citation style with two main features:

  • In-text citations, when you refer to another author's work you must cite your source by providing the last name(s) of the author(s) and the year of publication.
  • The reference list which appears at the end of your assignment and includes a full description of each source you have cited, listing them in alphabetical order by the author's last name.
